The Southwest 3400 has an internal capacity of 50 liters and an additional 10 liters with external pockets and an extended roll-top closure.

Ropes, trekking poles, and similar items can be attached to the lid strap or the outside. The backpack features removable aluminum stays, a padded back, and a wide hip belt with two waterproof zippered pockets. On the outside, it has three stretch mesh pockets to prevent snagging.
